The Summer Cushion Edit: Linen, Stripes, Large Sizes and the Art of Stacking

Home Interiors  ·  Soft Furnishings  ·  Summer Living

There is a moment in late spring when the home needs to change. The heavy throws go away, the darker tones recede, and what the room wants instead is something lighter — something that holds the season. A good summer cushion does exactly this. It does not shout. It simply makes the room feel right for the time of year.

At Woodcock & Cavendish in Broadway, we have been building our cushion collection around a set of principles that hold across every season: natural fabrics, generous sizes, feather-filled pads, and designs that work as well on a bed as they do on a sofa or garden bench. For summer, those principles lead to linen — particularly stonewashed linen, which has the kind of relaxed, lived-in quality that makes a room feel cool and considered at the same time.

This post is a guide to our current summer cushion edit: the linen styles, the stripe designs, the large sizes worth knowing about, and some practical advice on how to stack and layer cushions so the result looks deliberate rather than accumulated.

Everything featured is available now — in store at 14 The Green, Broadway, WR12 7AA, and online at woodcockandcavendish.co.uk.

Why Linen for Summer

Linen is the natural choice for summer cushions for reasons that go beyond aesthetics. It is breathable and naturally hypoallergenic, meaning it stays cool to the touch even in warm rooms. It does not trap dust or moisture the way synthetic fabrics can. And uniquely among natural textiles, linen improves with washing — becoming softer, more pliable, and more beautiful with every wash rather than degrading over time.

Stonewashed linen takes these qualities further. The stonewashing process pre-softens the fabric, removing the initial stiffness that can make untreated linen feel rigid. The result is a textile that has that characteristic slightly rumpled, relaxed quality — the look of a room that has been lived in comfortably rather than arranged for a photograph.

01  /  The Stripe Linen Cushion

Pink Stripe Stonewashed Linen Cushion — 45cm

The stripe is one of the oldest patterns in textile history, and in linen it has never looked better. Our Pink Stripe Stonewashed Linen Cushion brings together two of the most reliable elements of summer interior design — the vertical stripe and the soft, textured surface of stonewashed linen — in a 45cm square that is designed specifically as a layering piece.

The pink is muted and sophisticated rather than bright — a dusty, faded tone that reads as neutral in certain lights and gently warm in others. It works with whites, creams, oats, and the deeper blues and greys that tend to anchor a summer sofa scheme. The ruffled edge elevates the design without making it fussy: a detail that adds depth and dimension to a cushion stack without competing with the patterns around it.

At 45cm, this sits best in front of a larger 50cm or 53cm cushion — see the stacking guide further down this post for more on layering by size.

02  /  The Large Linen Cushion

Ruffled Linen Cushion in Sand — 45cm & 53cm

The question of size matters more than most people realise when choosing cushions. A cushion that is too small for the sofa it sits on looks lost. A cushion that is appropriately large — 50cm or more — fills the space, supports the back properly, and gives the room the sense of generosity and comfort that good soft furnishings are supposed to provide.

Our Ruffled Linen Cushion in Sand is available in two sizes — 45cm and a generous 53cm — making it one of the largest cushions in our current collection. The 53cm is particularly well suited to large sofas, beds, and garden benches where a smaller cushion simply does not do the space justice. The Sand colourway is one of the warmest neutrals we carry: a soft, sun-bleached tone that pairs with almost everything, from crisp white linen to faded indigo and terracotta.

Crafted from a blend of linen and rayon, the fabric has that characteristic slightly matte, slightly textured surface that photographs beautifully and feels even better. The ruffled edge — consistent across our linen cushion range — adds dimension and softness to the silhouette. The feather-filled pad gives it the plump, inviting shape that synthetic-filled cushions rarely achieve.

03  /  The Floral Linen Cushion

Floral Linen Cushions — Made in Britain  ·  40cm & 50cm

Our floral linen cushion range is one of the longest-running and most consistently popular parts of the Woodcock & Cavendish soft furnishings edit. Made in Britain from premium linen, they carry the quality marks that matter: the fabric is naturally breathable and becomes softer with each wash, the feather pad is included, and the designs — available in pale pink, dark grey, and a range of other floral colourways — are the kind that work across interiors rather than defining them.

The pale pink floral is the summer choice: a delicate design that adds a soft, romantic note to a neutral sofa scheme without demanding attention. The dark grey floral is its year-round counterpart — equally at home on a summer linen sofa as it is against a wool throw in autumn. Both are available in small (40cm) and large (50cm) sizes, and both are designed to be mixed and matched — a small pink floral in front of a large dark grey, or two large designs side by side, reads as deliberate and considered.

As with all our linen cushions, these are made to be used rather than preserved. The linen will soften and improve over time, and the feather pad will hold its shape wash after wash.

04  /  The Statement Cushion

Blue Floral Velvet Cushion — 50cm  ·  Made in the UK

Not every summer cushion needs to be linen. There is a place in any considered cushion scheme for a deeper, richer piece that anchors the lighter tones around it — something with weight and texture that prevents the arrangement from becoming too airy. Our Blue Floral Velvet Cushion fills exactly this role.

Made in the UK at 50cm x 50cm, it features a deep blue velvet front with a beautiful floral pattern and a solid coordinating reverse. The duck feather pad gives it the full, plump shape that velvet cushions demand — a flat velvet cushion loses the lustre of the fabric, whereas a generously filled one catches the light with every angle. The hidden zip closure makes the cover easy to remove for cleaning.

In a summer scheme built around linen and natural tones, one or two velvet cushions in a deep blue or dark grey provide the visual contrast that makes the lighter pieces read as intentional rather than incidental.

How to Stack and Layer Cushions: A Practical Guide

Stacking cushions well is one of those skills that looks effortless when done correctly and immediately obvious when it is not. The key is to think in three layers, and to let size, texture, and pattern do the work of creating visual interest without requiring you to think too hard about individual combinations.

The Three-Layer Rule

Layer one — Back (largest)

Start with your largest cushions at the back — 50cm or 53cm works well on a standard three-seat sofa. These are your anchor. Keep them in a solid or subtle texture: a large plain linen, a stonewashed neutral, or a soft stripe. Two matching back cushions at opposite ends give the sofa a sense of symmetry and calm.

Layer two — Middle (medium)

In front of the back cushions, place a 45cm or 50cm cushion with more pattern or texture. This is where florals, stripes, or a velvet piece can come in. Slightly overlapping the back cushion is intentional — it reads as layered rather than just placed. For a three-seat sofa, two or three middle cushions is usually right.

Layer three — Front (smallest or most distinctive)

The front layer is optional — a single 40cm or 45cm cushion placed centrally, or at one end, creates a finishing touch. This is the piece that can be most decorative, most colourful, or most distinctive. A 45cm pink stripe ruffled linen is ideal here: it adds pattern and texture at the front without competing with the layers behind.

On number: The odd number rule — three or five cushions rather than two or four — tends to produce arrangements that feel relaxed and natural rather than formal and symmetrical. Two identical cushions at the ends of a sofa is a good base; an odd number in the middle creates movement.

On pattern mixing: The rule of thumb is one pattern per layer. If your back cushions are plain linen, your middle layer can carry the stripe or floral, and your front piece can be either plain or a small-scale pattern. Two large-scale florals side by side will compete. A large-scale floral behind a small-scale stripe will not.

On feather pads: All of our cushions are feather-filled or include a feather pad, and this matters more than it might seem. A well-filled feather cushion holds its “karate-chop” shape — the gentle indent at the top that signals a cushion is properly full — and contributes significantly to the overall look of a well-dressed sofa. Flat, synthetic-filled cushions, however good the cover, will always look slightly deflated by comparison.
